A step-by-step Langham hamster cage setup for the 78cm two floor cage, from checking bar spacing to placing ramps, bedding and accessories safely.

Quick answer

Build the Langham cage on a level surface, fit the second floor and ramp before adding bedding, then place heavy items on the lower level and light enrichment upstairs. Check the 1cm bar spacing and every ramp connection before your pet goes in.

Why the 78 x 48 x 58 cm footprint changes your setup order

The Langham measures 78 x 48 x 58 cm overall, so the two floors share a fairly compact base. That makes the order of assembly matter: if you fill the base with bedding first, you will struggle to clip the upper level and ramp into place afterward.

Work from the frame outward. Assemble the cage body and second floor, test the ramp, and only then add substrate and accessories. This also lets you spot a loose connection before a hamster or rat starts climbing.

Hamster versus rat: adjust the layout, not the frame

The same Langham shell suits both animals, but the inside should look different. A hamster needs deeper bedding to burrow, while a rat needs more vertical climbing and ledge space. The narrow 1cm bar spacing is the shared safety feature that keeps small bodies inside.

If you keep rats, expect to rearrange ledges and hammocks more often because rats are stronger and more active. For hamsters, keep the upper floor lighter and leave the base for deep bedding.

Step-by-step Langham cage setup

  1. Unpack and check every panel: Lay out the base, side panels, second floor, ramp and clips before assembly. Count the parts against the instructions and check the 1cm bar spacing is consistent across panels. A missing clip or bent bar is easier to spot now than after the cage is built.
  2. Assemble the base and lower walls: Build the lower level on a flat, level floor, pressing each panel joint fully together. Do not add bedding yet. A wobbling base usually means one joint is not fully seated.
  3. Fit the second floor: Attach the upper level so it sits level and all support points engage. Check that the floor edges meet the walls without gaps wider than the bar spacing. Push down gently on the centre of the upper floor to confirm it does not flex.
  4. Secure the ramp: Hook the ramp onto the second floor and check both ends are locked. Set the angle so your pet can climb without a steep drop. A ramp that lifts off when nudged needs repositioning before use.
  5. Add bedding to the lower level: Fill the base with bedding, leaving the ramp entry clear. For hamsters, aim for a deeper layer; for rats, keep it moderate and save space for climbing. Do not block the ramp with bedding, or your pet may avoid the upper floor.
  6. Place heavy accessories downstairs: Put the wheel, food bowl and water bottle on the lower level. Keep the upper floor for light items such as a hammock, tunnel or small hide. Heavy items upstairs can make the cage top-heavy and harder to clean.
  7. Do a final safety check: Run a finger along every joint and bar end, confirm the door latch closes firmly, and check there are no sharp edges inside. Only then introduce your hamster or rat. Recheck the ramp and door latch weekly, especially with rats.
